The nicest way to get to know Colònia de Sant Jordi is on foot, along the coast. You don’t need to be a mountaineer or look for inland trails: right from the town, paths follow the sea — from a gentle sunset stroll to a long walk past wild beaches all the way to the southernmost lighthouse on Mallorca. Here are the real ones, with actual distances, a map and honest warnings.

The seaside promenade (easy, for everyone)
If you’re only going to do one walk, make it this one. It starts at Es Port beach, right in town, and follows the sea westwards to Platja des Marquès. About 30–45 minutes at an easy pace, flat and suitable for anyone. It’s the locals’ classic stroll and the best spot to watch the sunset.

To the wild beaches: Es Carbó and Es Caragol
A local tip almost nobody knows: access via the Camí de Sa Vall (the road crossing the private estate) towards Es Carbó and Es Dolç is reserved for people officially registered as residents of the town. If you are not, do not try to drive in that way: come on foot from Colònia along the coast (past Es Dolç) or by a rented boat from the harbour.
This is the really beautiful walk. Heading south from the town, a flat path hugging the sea takes you to a string of wild beaches with white sand and turquoise water that can only be reached on foot (or by boat). That’s why they’re so quiet and there isn’t a hotel in sight.
The first lovely stop is Es Dolç (about 2 km); a little further, the gem: Platja des Carbó, around 3.2 km / 45 minutes from Colònia. If you’re up for more, carry on to Platja des Caragol (~8.4 km), already close to the cape.
A tip for Es Caragol: it’s a long way on foot from town. The easiest option is to drive, park on the road by the Cap de ses Salines and walk about 15 minutes to the beach.
No bar, no shade, no water. Es Carbó and Es Caragol have no services at all. Bring plenty of water, food, shade (an umbrella) and everything you’ll need — and take your rubbish back with you.

The long route: to the Cap de ses Salines lighthouse
For anyone wanting a proper hike, the coast continues to the Cap de ses Salines, the southernmost point of Mallorca, crowned by its lighthouse. It’s around 9 km and nearly 2 hours just one way from Colònia, flat but completely exposed to the sun.

Factor in the way back: it’s nearly 2 hours each way, so either go there and back with plenty of time, or plan how you’ll return. Set off early in the morning; midday in summer is no fun.

Good news for this one: Es Trenc does have a small beach kiosk where you can grab a drink (no tables to sit at) — the only service on this whole stretch of coast.

Arriving by sea (renting a boat)
These same wild coves can also be enjoyed from the water. In Colònia there are companies that rent small boats, with and without a licence (for example Colonia Boat Charter, by the port), which you can use to reach Es Carbó, Es Caragol or Es Trenc on your own. It’s a lovely way to see them from a different angle and to bring your own water and food to beaches that have nothing.

Tips for walking the coast
The golden rule of the south: there’s almost no shade on any stretch. In summer, walk early in the morning or at sunset, never at midday.
- Water, lots of water, a hat and sun cream. There’s nowhere to buy anything at Es Carbó or Es Caragol.
- Comfortable shoes: the path is flat but made of earth and sand; trainers work better than flip-flops for the longer stretches.
- Best time: spring and autumn, with warm water and none of the summer heat.
- Respect the surroundings: these are protected wild beaches. Take all your rubbish with you.
