Es Trenc and Cala Mondragó are two of the most beautiful beaches in southern and south-eastern Mallorca, but they’re very different: one is a huge wild strand, the other a snug cove among pines. This guide helps you choose based on what you’re after, with real distances from Colònia, services and a table to see it at a glance.

Es Trenc: big, open and wild

Es Trenc is the south’s great natural beach: almost 3 km of white sand and turquoise water, with dunes behind and barely any building. It’s the choice for space and nature, a short hop from Colònia (~10 min). In return, it has almost no services: bring water and shade. All the detail in the Es Trenc guide.

Cala Mondragó: a sheltered cove among pines

Cala Mondragó, on the east coast (near Santanyí, inside the Mondragó Natural Park), is another thing: a snug cove of fine sand, shallow turquoise water, ringed by pines. It’s more sheltered and family-friendly, with a beach bar, parking and toilets. It’s about 30-35 minutes from Colònia, so it’s more of a day-trip plan.

So which do we choose?

Simple: if you want a huge, natural beach close by, Es Trenc. If you’d rather a snugger cove with pines and some services (and don’t mind the drive), Cala Mondragó. With children both work well thanks to the shallow water; Mondragó edges it on comfort for the services, Es Trenc on space. And if you’ve got a few days, do both: they’re different experiences.

Great if you’re torn between the wild strand (Es Trenc) and the sheltered pine-fringed cove (Mondragó).
Skip it if you already know which you prefer.

Local tip: choose Es Trenc for a wild, spacious strand; Cala Mondragó if you prefer a sheltered pine-fringed cove with services. Both fill up: go early or outside August.
