Bookings
Right beside Es Trenc beach, about 10 minutes from Colònia de Sant Jordi, are the Salines d’Es Trenc: working salt flats where the famous Flor de Sal is hand-harvested and, around the ponds, flamingos and dozens of birds live. We live next door, and it’s one of the plans we recommend most for something different between beach days.
Data: Open-Meteo.
What the Salines d’Es Trenc are
They are working sea-salt flats that use the southern sun and wind to evaporate seawater through a series of ponds until the salt forms. From the fine crust on the surface, the Flor de Sal — the most prized salt — is harvested by hand. It’s a beautiful, calm landscape, with white mountains of salt and pink reflections at sunset.
The guided tour
You can visit on a guided tour of about 45 minutes that covers the whole process, from seawater to Flor de Sal. It runs by appointment and in several languages (Spanish, English, German, French and Italian, among others). To book: +34 971 65 33 85, visitas@salinasdestrenc.com or at salinasdestrenc.com. They’re on the Campos to Colònia de Sant Jordi road, km 8.7.
Flor de Sal, the best souvenir
Flor de Sal d’Es Trenc is a renowned gourmet product, and here you’ll find it in the shop in many varieties (natural and blends with herbs, flowers, spices…). It’s the kind of souvenir that weighs little, fits in your case and actually gets used back home. Perfect for taking a piece of southern Mallorca with you.
Flamingos and birds of the Salobrar
The salt flats are part of the Salobrar de Campos, a protected wetland and one of the best spots in Mallorca for birdwatching. Between April and October it’s common to see flamingos, along with black-winged stilts, avocets and waders. Bring binoculars and go at dawn or dusk, when there’s more activity and better light. More in the Salobrar flamingos guide.

Getting there and pairing it with the beach
They’re right next to Es Trenc, about 10 minutes by car from Colònia, so the perfect plan is salt flats + beach the same day: the tour early morning (cooler) and then the beach, or the other way round. See the Es Trenc guide for parking.
A local’s tips
Book the tour ahead in season, go with a hat, water and sun protection (there’s little shade), and stay on the paths so you don’t disturb the birds. In summer, the early hours are far more pleasant. And don’t leave without a jar of Flor de Sal.
