Es Dolç beach, Colònia de Sant Jordi: a local guide

6 min read

Of all the beaches in Colònia de Sant Jordi itself, Es Dolç is the easiest: the town beach you walk down to, towel under your arm, when you don’t fancy taking the car or fighting for a parking spot. It’s not the white-sand, turquoise-water postcard —that’s Es Trenc or Es Carbó—; Es Dolç is something else: comfort and calm a short walk from the centre.

  • What it is: a quiet sandy beach within Colònia, with shallow, clear water.
  • Where: in the village itself; about an 8-minute walk from the centre, no car or parking.
  • Its name: ‘dolç’ (sweet), after the fresh water that surfaces near the ponds and salt flats.
  • Ideal for: families with kids and babies, and for a quick, quiet swim.
  • Facilities: lifeguards in season and Chiringuito Es Dolç El Paraiso.
  • Heads up: the camí de Sa Vall (towards Es Dolç and Es Carbó) is for residents only; you go on foot.

How to get there (on foot, no car)

The great thing about Es Dolç is that you don’t need a car or parking: it’s in the village itself. From the centre of Colònia it’s about an 8-minute walk: head down to the port beach (Es Port) and follow the shoreline promenade, which curves around the bay to where Es Dolç begins. It’s a short, flat stroll. Here’s the exact route:

A local tip almost nobody knows: the road access via the camí de Sa Vall (the track that crosses the private estate) towards Es Dolç and Es Carbó is reserved for registered residents; if you’re not one, don’t try to drive in that way: go on foot from Colònia. And as on every beach in the south, respect the dunes and the dry Posidonia at the shoreline, and take your rubbish with you.

What the beach is like

Sand and very shallow, clear water, the kind you wade into gradually. Its name —dolç, “sweet”— comes from the fresh water that surfaces in the area, next to the ponds and salt flats that give the village its name. There’s rarely any swell and it’s usually quieter than the port beach. A local note: the further you go from the village (the far end of the beach), the more space and calm you’ll find. And let’s be honest: it’s not an untouched postcard cove; if you want white sand and turquoise water with no buildings, that’s Es Trenc or Es Carbó, a walk further on. Es Dolç is the comfort of having the sea eight minutes away.

Who it’s ideal for (and who it isn’t)

  • Families with kids and babies: the best option. The water is so shallow and calm it feels like a natural pool —perfect if a little one is trying salt water for the first time—. It’s the secret of many local families.
  • Stand-up paddle: being sheltered, it’s a good place to start out with a SUP.
  • A quick swim: a dip with no plan and no car, a short walk from home.
  • Not the best if you want: a wild postcard, white sand or lots of buzz. For that, Es Trenc, Es Carbó or the port beach.

Facilities: lifeguards, beach bar and the village next door

Es Dolç has lifeguards in season —a plus if you’re with children— and Chiringuito Es Dolç El Paraiso right on the sand, for a drink or a snack (it has a toilet; bookings on +34 616 22 71 23). There are sunbeds and umbrellas for hire if you want to lie back in comfort, though you can also bring your own shade. There are no showers, so bear that in mind. Everything else (supermarkets, pharmacy, restaurants) is a short walk away in the village.

Combine it: snorkelling, paddle and walking to Es Carbó

  • Snorkelling: there’s decent free-diving snorkelling on the rocks next to Es Dolç, close to the village. Watch out for boats if you get near the port: stick to the coast.
  • Stand-up paddle: its sheltered water is ideal for a calm paddle.
  • Walking to Es Carbó: Es Dolç is the first stop on the coastal walk towards Platja des Carbó (~3.2 km / 45 min from Colònia), one of the loveliest unspoilt beaches in the south. A great plan: an easy swim here and, if you’re up for it, carry on to Es Carbó.

Es Port, Es Dolç or Es Marquès: which one?

All three are Colònia beaches you reach on foot. The difference is the vibe and how far you want to go:

BeachWalk (centre)VibeBest for
Es Port (port beach)~3 minThe liveliest, with facilities right thereHaving everything close
Es Dolç~8 minQuiet and shallow; the far end, even more soFamilies, babies, calm

A local’s tips

Head to the far end for more calm; late in the afternoon the water goes glassy; if you’d rather not pay for a sunbed, bring your own shade; and respect the dunes and the dry Posidonia at the shoreline —it’s what keeps this place so clean— and take your rubbish with you.

Local tip: the water is cooler here thanks to the freshwater spring (es dolç = ‘sweet water’). Head away from the port to the far end and you’ll be almost alone; it’s a walk from the village.
