From Colònia
The Salobrar de Campos, right beside Es Trenc beach and just 10 minutes from Colònia de Sant Jordi, is one of Mallorca’s best wetlands for birds: more than 170 species and, with luck, groups of pink flamingos over the ponds. We live next door, and this is our honest guide to seeing them well, without disturbing them, with the best season and the exact spots.
Data: Open-Meteo.
What the Salobrar de Campos is
The Salobrar de Campos is a protected wetland (Area of Special Natural Interest), part of the Es Trenc-Salobrar de Campos Natural Park. It’s a mosaic of salt pans, shallow lagoons and saltmarsh right behind Es Trenc beach — the perfect habitat for waterbirds and waders all year round.

Flamingos: when to see them
Flamingos can be seen for much of the year, feeding in the shallow lagoons. The largest groups tend to be from late summer through to spring (in winter dozens, sometimes hundreds, gather). There’s no guarantee — they’re wild birds — but the odds are high if you go quietly and at a good hour.
Much more than flamingos
With more than 170 species, the Salobrar is a feast for anyone who looks. Beyond the flamingos, it’s easy to see black-winged stilts, avocets, Kentish plovers and many waders; on migration, redshanks, sandpipers and godwits appear; and overhead, the osprey and terns. With a pair of binoculars, every visit is different.
Where to watch: hides and trails
The area has hides (observatories) and paths skirting the salt flats and dunes, designed for watching without disturbing. Access is from the Campos to Colònia road and the Ses Covetes area. Move slowly, use the hides and stay on the trails: you’ll see far more and won’t flush the birds.
Getting there and pairing it
It’s about 10 minutes by car from Colònia, next to Es Trenc, so it pairs perfectly with a beach day or with the salt flats tour. Go at dawn or dusk: more activity, better light for photos and less heat. See also the Es Trenc guide for parking.

Ethics and a local’s tips
Bring binoculars (or a scope), a hat, water and sun protection. Don’t approach the birds or leave the paths, don’t use drones and keep quiet: it’s a sensitive area and that’s how it’s preserved. With respect, it’s one of the most beautiful natural spectacles in southern Mallorca.
