Colònia de Sant Jordi is a small fishing village, so you eat fresh fish and seafood here like in few places in southern Mallorca. This is our honest guide to where to eat depending on what you fancy: fish by the port, rice dishes, a terrace with views of Cabrera, real Mallorcan cooking, or a sunset drink on a rooftop. With real names, not filler.

Fresh fish and seafood
It’s what you eat best here, and where we take the family. The most rounded right now is S’Escar (4.8★), the Hotel Colonial’s restaurant in an old boat shed right by the sea: everything off the grill — Mallorcan octopus, black rice and the odd off-menu fish such as dentex. A nice touch: the ice creams come from their own parlour, so you skip the street queue. Closed Wednesdays, and on Thursdays it opens for dinner only, so book ahead.
Es Marisol (seafront, wicker-chair terrace) is the classic bet for fish and seafood of the day: grilled megrim, fish stew, sole, black rice and generous seafood platters, with a very well-priced lunch menu. If you stay with us, you get 10% off with the apartment voucher (tel. 971 65 50 70); closed Wednesdays. The Hostal Restaurante Playa, the oldest in town (since 1921), has one of the best terraces on the promenade and good grilled fish; we’ll be honest — its paellas get uneven reviews, so go for the fish. Closed Mondays.
Rice and paella
For a proper village-style Mallorcan paella — bits and all, full of flavour — the go-to is S’Arrosseria, by the port, open at lunchtime only (13:00–17:00). It’s only fair to warn you: in high season it runs long waits and the service gets swamped, so book, go early and don’t be in a rush. If you want rice without the wait, Es Marisol and 5 Illes nail it too.
By the sea, with views
Auba Cafè (S’Auba) (4.5★) is a favourite of ours right on the beach: Mallorcan cooking and tapas in a calm, quiet setting, with off-menu wins like the prawn fritters. Closed Wednesdays. 5 Illes, on the edge of Platja de s’Estany, has the most unbeatable spot in town — a table almost on the sand — and dishes like Iberian-pork-and-sobrassada rice, plus gluten-free options; given the volume it handles, the value of its paellas gets mixed reviews, but for the location and views it’s worth it. For a design-led beach house, Cassai Beach House (rustic-chic in white and blue, terrace with views): you go for the atmosphere, the tapas and a sunset drink rather than a great dinner. And the Es Dolç beach bar, casual, with your feet almost in the sand.
Mallorcan and creative cooking
For a meal to celebrate, Sal de Cocó (on the quay) does creative cooking with Mallorcan roots from its chef and owner, Marta Roselló: a tasting menu, homemade croquettes and a terrace away from the promenade noise. Closed Tuesdays; worth booking. Salicornia, facing the port, is island cooking with local produce — senyoret rice, mussels, squid-and-cod croquettes, wine-pairing dinners with Mallorcan wineries — and good vegetarian and vegan options. And Ca’n Gori (Carrer Estanys 21, a step from the apartments) is the family bodega-bar of a lifetime: daily menu, aged beef, ham and tapas, from 7am to midnight. One heads-up so it doesn’t catch you out: they take cash only, and on public holidays the menu is by QR code.
Casual and with kids
The best-rated place in the whole town is, funnily enough, a casual one: El Suricata (4.9★, right on the seafront). Burgers are the speciality — the truffle “Topo”, the island one, a vegan version and gluten-free bread — and in the morning it serves seafront breakfasts like scrambled-egg toast or yoghurt with forest fruits, at some of the most reasonable prices around. Tip: book a table on the terrace, because the inner patio loses the breeze in the August heat. Closed Mondays. Next to the apartments, Pizzeria Vesuvio (Carrer Estanys 29) makes wood-fired Roman pizza the size of a wheel — one individual feeds two — with Italian ingredients and a pistachio tiramisù that flies out the door; family-friendly and lively, closed Wednesdays.
A drink at sunset on a rooftop
For a drink with the best views in the south at sunset, the hotel rooftops open to the public (usually with a booking): The Top, at Hotel Honucai (Carrer Bonança 1), signature cocktails and stunning views; and The Sunset Sea Club, at Hotel Villa Chiquita (adults only, infinity pool), with a minimum spend and booking.
Authentic Mallorcan: the village of Ses Salines
For the real Mallorca it’s worth driving 5 minutes up to the village of Ses Salines, where we locals eat. Bodega Barahona (Casa Manolo) is a family institution with a Repsol Guide Sol, famous for its fish tapas and homemade ice creams. Cassai Gran Café, in a 300-year-old Mallorcan house, does tapas, fish and cocktails with one of the prettiest terraces (not to be confused with the Cassai Beach House in Colònia). And for a daily menu and home cooking, Sa Fusteria and Ca’n Estarellas (the latter in a former theatre on the square).
