When does each beach get busy?

This map colours the local beaches by how crowded they get. Tap each month to see how it changes: the easy-access ones fill up in July and August, while the walk-in ones stay quiet for most of the summer.

And to decide today, this traffic light checks the wind right now and tells you where the water is flattest (the southern sandy beaches calm down with offshore wind; with a southerly, go for the sheltered town beaches):

For the youngest, the most convenient are Es Port and Es Dolç (a short walk, sand and shallow water); Es Marquès, Es Trenc and Ses Covetes make up for the drive with plenty of space and a shallow entry. A little further, in Santanyí, you also have Cala Santanyí (with an accessible boardwalk) and Cala Llombards (beach bar), great for a full day.

Es Port: the closest, in the village

Es Port is Colònia’s main beach, about 3 minutes’ walk from our apartments and from most of the village. Sandy and shallow, with the promenade, bars and services right beside it — the most convenient for a day with kids without depending on the car. It fills up early, but also empties at siesta time.

Es Dolç: the calmest and shallowest

Es Dolç (about 8 minutes’ walk) is one of the favourites for the youngest: sand, clear and very shallow water you wade into gradually, and usually calmer than the port beach. Local heads-up: access via the Sa Vall track (the road crossing the private estate) is reserved for registered residents; if you’re not, walk from the village. See the Es Dolç guide.

Es Trenc: the big white-sand beach

About 10 minutes by car, Es Trenc is the postcard beach: kilometres of white sand and turquoise water with a very shallow entry, ideal for splashing. It’s a protected natural area, so it has few facilities (bring water, shade and something to eat) and in summer it’s best to arrive early. It makes up for it with plenty of space for the kids. Next to it, Ses Covetes is the same sand with fewer people.

Cala Galiota: snorkelling with older kids

In the village itself, Cala Galiota is rocky with very clear water: not a sandy beach for the youngest, but perfect for easy snorkelling with kids who already swim. Mask and fins, and off to see fish over the Posidonia.

For a quieter day

If you want something more secluded, Es Marquès is quieter (it takes a bit more to reach, which filters the crowds), and Es Carbó is a beautiful unspoilt beach a walk along the coast. And for a full day, the family-friendly Cala Llombards (beach bar and boardwalk) or Cala Santanyí are excellent. Note: like Es Dolç, vehicle access to Es Carbó via Sa Vall is for registered residents only; you go on foot.

Tips for a beach day with kids

A couple of things help a lot: go first thing or mid-afternoon (the midday sun is harsh), bring your own shade because it’s scarce on some beaches, and plenty of water. We include a beach kit (parasol, chairs, towels and a cool box) so you head out without carrying anything. And respect the dunes and the dry Posidonia on the shore.
